Translated in several languages and published by SOLEN in Slovakia, this book will show you how to build character, clarify values, and achieve motivation for a meaningful life through the ancient game of chess. Unique and universal, chess continues to be relevant to human life and struggles; its powers in education and character education have been known for centuries but research has only recently started to quantify them. Chess helps develop grit, discipline, initiative, creativity, and other necessary qualities for authentic living. This book makes the adventure of character building tangible and fun. You do not need to be a good chess player to find this method useful. All you need to know is how six pieces move.

Character Education with Chess eBook Roumen Bezergianov

It's impossible not to like this book, The author, a Bulgarian-American Sufi Muslim, relies heavily on the work of Jewish Psychologist Victor Frankl, a holocaust survivor. Additionally, he weaves his personal experiences together quotes and stories from Einstein, Rumi, Tolstoy and other mystics and scientists, into a concise and orderly analysis of chess as a teaching tool. Most importantly, the author counters the notion that chess is a war game and proceeds to make a compelling case for an "allegorical interpretation of chess...according to the Indian philosophy of nature." But the book is more than high-minded mystical meanderings through the history of human thought. It's also practical. I found several very useful insights in this book when it comes to working with teen students in chess and will certainly share and re-read this book many times in the future.

Character Education with Chess eBook Roumen Bezergianov Reviews

At first glance, "Character Education with Chess" may seem to be a book that will only be appreciated by the specialized reader the expert in chess research, or the minority of cognitive psychologists who peruse research in the areas of problem solving and skill acquisition. Such an inference would not erroneously but also regrettable, because this book will be of interest to a much wider audience then it's title suggests. The book presents an extensive review of the literature on chess research and ideas that can be extracted from chess. Very interesting book, worth reading it.
Roumen Bezergianov is a very professional and an intelligent man who practices what he preaches. The book provides personal stories in his life to illustrate the points he mentions in his book to provide the reader with a deeper understanding about how chess can influence and inspire a child or any individual in determining the meaning in their life. I personally do not have much knowledge about the game of chess, but you do not need to in order to follow the purpose of the book, as well as Roumen gives brief descriptions of each piece and their meaning. Overall, this book has inspired me when I am working with children and individuals who are in a vulnerable and difficult situation, such as incarceration, to find meaning in their life that will push them to want to move forward with their life in a positive way to reach that goal.

A must read for everyone
Anyone who has ever played chess understands the connections between decision points in that game and in life. In his work with young people, Bezergianov has been able to help them see the important parallels between the individual chess pieces and the deliberative moves we make in our lives as family members and citizens. Teachers, school administrators, and parents will find this book insightful and useful in dealing on a daily basis with students of any age. I highly recommend Character Education with Chess.
