This is a nifty mystery taking place in the very late 19th century. Knowles Swift is a 26 year old detective who is put in charge of determining who killed the nasty financier, Felix Page, late one evening in his mansion. The cast of characters is wonderful including Page's nephew, Roayl Maillot (isn't that a terrific name!) who is in love with Page's bitter adversary's daughter, Belle; Genevieve, Belle's cousin; Burke, Page's slimy private secretary, some Burmese, and oh! The Paternoster Ruby; the center of the mystery and root cause of the murder. And there's some romance, a few fisticuffs, guilt misplaced not once but twice; a great tale of intrigue! I know that Walk wrote other books about Swift but none have been converted to eBooks. I'm going to keep my eye out....but in the meantime, try this one and then tell Amazon that you want more!!!

The type in this book was centered & it was impossible to resd.
Great story. I love Resurrected Press books. The print is large enough to read. Keep up the good work. You have introduced me to wonderful authors that I would not have discovered on my own. Many thanks.
This story, first published in 1910, is an evenly paced mystery that takes place in 1892. Our hero, Knowles Swift, is a 26-year-old detective who is put in charge of uncovering who killed spiteful financier, Felix Page in his mansion. This mystery is told from the vantage point of Swift. The characters surrounding him and his work, are some of the best, and perhaps memorable characters one can place in an oldie mystery. There are a couple of twists in the plot that, even though I thought I knew who was the murderer, surprise! Guess again!

Basically, the center of the story is the Paternoster Ruby which “first became known to the world and acquired its name through one Luca
Paternostro, an Italian dealer in precious stones having his place of business in London, who claimed to have purchased it in the rough from some adventurer whose name is unknown to history.”

The deceased Page purchased the ruby at a high cost; he <*had*> to have it so his bitter rival. Albert Fluette, couldn’t. It was a matter of greed, and it was a matter of murder.

The characters are memorable and believable

Stodger is Swift’s stocky right-hand man. His language is humorously lively. For example, when he is talking about Page’s secretary, Burke, here are his thoughts of him “Burke—Alexander Stilwell; queer chap. Close-mouthed? Say!"—he squared around and tapped my chest with an impressive forefinger—"a clam 's real noisy compared with him.”

Royal Maillot is Page’s slimy nephew. He’s in love with Belle, the daughter of the late Felix Page’s adversary, Alfred Fluette.

Miss Genevieve Cooper. Ah, Miss Cooper, lovely and virginal with her long dark eyelashes and clear blue eyes. No wonder our hero, Knowles Swift, is smitten. Indeed, Swift acknowledges that his “determination to solve the mystery of Felix Page's death was inextricably interwoven with another determination to win one final friendly, commendatory look—perhaps a word or two, or even a warm hand-clasp —from Miss Genevieve
Cooper.” Yes, he was besotted.

There are more in this cast of characters – a dwarf, a doctor, Burmese, the men from the funeral home, the inquest jury, a paste copy of the Paternoster Ruby, et cetera,

The writing style is what is to be expected of turn of the century writing. It’s structurally correct, a little high-hatted, and a joy to pour over the pages. Think of Hollywood’s Golden Age actor, William Powell narrating, and you have the idea of the intelligent-sounding mellow tone. Moreover, the language in this mystery is clean "You—you spy! You dirty sneak!" he snarled viciously. This is the roughest the language gets, and it’s delightful.

And one of the most memorable passages that caught my attention – and so much so I re-read it several times for the pure image and clear sound of it “The scream was a thrilling, prolonged note of horror.”

And this mystery is a thrilling story in its old-fashioned way.
