If someone is looking for a contemporary viewpoint of humanity, this book is not a good fit. Instead, it does provide some insight into thinking during the author's time period. I thought some of the ideas were rather far fetched, but it would be difficult to demonstrate that the author was just making things up. I did find myself thinking "Oh, come on now" throughout the book, but I was reading the book because it had been recommended to me as providing some insights into some non-traditional thinking that bordered on mysticism. I really didn't find that element in the book however.All in all, the book is very dated. Unless someone is doing historical research it probably won't prove beneficial to most readers.

So I have been meaning to read Lessing for a long time. I came across references to him in the writings of Hesse and Schopenhauer, both of whom actually thought for themselves and wrote for the right reasons, a rare occurrence in our modern world. Finally, this morning I took the time to read this book and I was floored by it. That there are only two other reviews is indicative of how the value of Lessing has been lost in our modern world. I cannot believe I never heard mention of him at any point in my education, particularly when I took a large number of philosophy courses in college, though amazingly enough I never heard of Schopenhauer in college either. What the hell are schools teaching? Anyway, this little book is brilliant. The reviewer above who criticizes it as irrelevant to modern thought has done no thinking on his own and, because of that, cannot see what Lessing is talking about. It is true that the reader needs to avoid being bogged down by modern bulls*** concerning religion. It is easy to jump to the conclusion that Lessing is taking religious teachings literally, as is talked about in modern times, and being put off by that notion. However, that as not what he is talking about. Lessing is pointing to an incredibly important aspect of human understanding that is wholly misunderstood. What he is saying, if you get it, is confirmed by Gödel's theorem which no one ignores but which came much later. He uses the word revelation and its relationship to reason, but the use of the term "revelation" will likely draw the ire of the anti-religious who turn off their minds before its genuine meaning can sink in. When you read it and see "revelation" replace it in your mind with the more accepted but less accurate term "creativity" if it helps you to avoid becoming mired in the silly debate between religious types and atheists. Clearly, Lessing isn't speaking in support of religious dogmas because he talks about how the old testament was merely a tool, moving a childlike people from an utter lack of morality to the first stage of moral behavior, and then how the new testament was the next stage - the next stage, not the final stage - this is the beauty of what Lessing is saying. He recognizes the relationship behind man's existing psychological state and the writings, as expressed in these differing religious doctrines (the old and new testament), that relate specifically to moving man forward in his understanding to the nest stage, and he realizes there are more stages to come for humanity when the old teachings must be shed and replaced by something new that we cannot yet understand because we are not there yet. On a very deep level, Lessing grasps the relationship between creativity and reason that has been lost in modern times, where reason is purported to be the only way forward. However, without creativity, which IS more accurately labeled revelation, reason has nothing to work upon and because revelation always comes through human consciousness, it is tainted, needing reason to separate the wheat from the chaff. Do not get mired in where creativity/revelation comes from, that is not Lessing's point. If the reader keeps these things in mind, then perhaps a few of you will see what Lessing is actually talking about and recognize its brilliance.
Difficult to read due to the old English way of using "f's" in place of "s's". Otherwise, good content.
