HBW’s basic philosophy was that we are given a mind to learn and a body to work. To be a whole man, satisfaction in the productive use of both is required of us. This idea is seen in all of his novels but comes out more directly in this one.His appreciation of horses is also obvious in many of his works, but it is more directly addressed here.
I have read most of HBW’s novels and recommend them to others even though I can never rate them 5 stars. He is a great writer until the conclusions which often verge on hokum. This book is no exception. Our hero rides off alone into the sunset.

Very good book!! Every man ought to read and understand it
I love this book. I borrowed it from my local library and liked it so much that I read it to my husband on our trip to New York. He liked it also, so I was going to read it to my older boys a few years later but my library had gotten rid of it. I was so excited to find a copy on so I can own this classic myself to read to all my children.
I enjoy Harold Bell Wright books but this is my least favorite of all of his. And the only reason is how the book ends. All the rest of the book is great! I just don't like the last chapter or two.
This author is great. I have a list of all his books and a list of his books that were turned into movies and seen all of them. He really takes you there in his stories. I can smell the trees, water, animals, hear the birds feel the people. He was a great author. This is a very good book. The ones that I have read so far I have truely enjoyed them. His books really makes a person think.
I am a HUGE Harold Bell Wright fan. I know his books are old and some are out of print or at least there are few copies left, but if you are able to get your hands on one then get it and enjoy it. When A Man's A Man is my favorite of all of his books that I have read. His books have been tested with time and are still worth your time and money.
